Raia VP to take stern action against roadside waste dumping

Margao: Disturbed over unabated dumping of waste along the village road leading to Sonsoddo waste dumping site, sarpanch and deputy sarpanch of village panchayat of Raia on Thursday said strict action will be taken against persons dumping garbage along the roads.

“Every week, we clear the waste and collect two to three truckloads. We have decided to take strict action against people dumping waste,” said sarpanch Esmeralda Gomes, while briefing the media.

She and deputy sarpanch engaged five labourers to clean up the area.  “The village road right up to the Sonsoddo site is full of waste. People dump sanitary pads and all sorts of waste along the road. It gives an ugly look to the passersby,” said deputy sarpanch Mario Fernandes. He appealed to the people not to discard waste on the road as it will be monitored and strong action will be taken against the violators.

Sources informed that people using the Rachol-Shiroda ferry also take advantage of the isolated road stretch and dump waste.

“We do not know who dumps the garbage on the roads, but it is mostly outsiders’ job,” Gomes claimed.

Former ZP member of Curtorim Moreno Rebello also spoke on the occasion in the presence of deputy sarpanch of Curtorim village Simon Baretto.
