MUMBAI: As many as 10 cops from Nehru Nagar police station, who had busted a gang of thieves, have tested positive for coronavirus infection.
The policemen, including two officers, have been asked to go under self-quarantine after they tested positive for the infection earlier this week.
Till now, at least 22 policemen from city have succumbed to coronavirus and more than 1,000 others have tested positive for the infection.
According to the police, last month, there was a theft in an electronics goods shop near Shell colony in Chembur. The Nehru Nagar police had registered the offence and were looking for the gang involved.
``Last week, we got a tip-off and we arrested seven members of the gang. They were produced before the court. The court remanded them to seven-day police custody. Samples of all the accused were sent for Covid test and by the time their report came the police team had contracted the virus.
Two police teams consisting around 10 cops were trying to interrogate, record statements and produce the gang before the court and provide them meals etc. In the melee, these 10 cops felt unwell and showed symptoms of Covid-19,’’ said an officer.
During a detailed study, the police team learnt that all the members connected with the case had contracted the virus. When this came to the notice of the senior police officials, they requested the court to release all the five accused on bail.
``Now all the five accused have been admitted to JJ Covid ward," said the officer.
