BENGALURU: Chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Wednesday assured Brahmin community legislators that the government will soon start issuing caste certificate to the community members.
At the inauguration of the Brahmin Development Board office and its website, community leaders and legislators from BJP and Congress urged the government to issue caste certificates to its members. The Brahmin Development Board was first proposed during the coalition government under former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy.
Yediyurappa and revenue minister R Ashoka said they will consider their plea and soon start issuing certificates. BJP MLA Ravi Subramanya told TOI this was one of the long-pending demands of the community. “In rural parts of Karnataka, the government demands caste certificate for all purposes. However, the state has never issued such certificates to Brahmins. For any populist scheme or scholarship, beneficiaries have to submit caste certificate along with income certificate. As a result, we urged the government to issue these certificates even for Brahmins,” said the Basavangudi MLA.
The community leaders have also urged the CM to implement the 10 per cent reservation announced by the Narendra Modi government for the economically weaker section (EWS).
“No community can be generalised as being forward. Every community has a forward and a backward class. The Brahmins are no different,” said Yediyurappa.
