NIRF Rankings 2020, MHRD NIRF India University Ranking List 2020 Live Updates: Despite their poor performance in the international rankings, IITs have emerged as the top institutes in India’s NIRF rankings announced today. The top-ranking institute in India is IIT-Madras followed by IISc Bangalore and at third rank is IIT-Delhi, reveals the Union Minister of Human Resource Development (HRD) Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank.
In the fifth NIRF ranking, in the university category, top rank is obtained by the IISc followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and at third rank is Banaras Hindu University (BHU). The top rank in terms of university, pharma, and overall category as well as in the college category remain the same. Miranda House is the top college in India and in the Pharma category, Jamia Hamdard has once again claimed the top position. IIT-Madras becomes best engineering college.
Regarding the poor performance in the international ranking, the HRD minister said that the bad rank obtained by the Indian institute is because of the high weightage given to ‘perspective’ as a parameter which is a subjective thing and he does not agree with it. One of the major reasons behind the decline in the ranking of Indian institutes is cited as a lack of internationalisation by international ranking orgaisations. HRD said that NIRF ranking will reach a point where international institutes will wish to be ranked in Indian rankings as opposed to the current trend.
The number of Indian institutes which registered for the NIRF ranking this year has increased from 20 per cent as compared to last year. This year for the first time dental institutes will also be ranked. Earlier, Institutes were ranked in multiple categories including – best overall institute, best university, top engineering institute, top college, best management institute, top pharmacy college, best law school, best architecture college, and top medical college.
The education institutes and universities all over India are ranked across several parameters including teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcome outreach and inclusivity, and perception.

We will create a situation when institutes from across the world will want to be listed in the Indian ranking. I request UGC to make it mandatory for all institutes and universities to participate in the Indian rankings, said HRD minister. Our student, their caliber and money will retain in India, we will reach that level, he added.
India has the potential. Our moral education is our strength. During the COVID-19 crisis the Indian students where creating solutions for the global problems through innovations. India has potential, that is why our 'Study in India' app is also working to bring international students to India, said HRD Minister
I do not agree with the THE and QS ranking. Graduates of our institutes are now heading the global leading organisations. They give us low ranking based on perception and I do not agree with it, said HRD Minister
We are dedicated to education and the students who are enrolling in our institutes, we need to make them into future leaders who will take India to new heights. We should have a feeling of healthy competition which can take our mission forward. If we have that spirit, then no one can stop us from reaching heights, said HRD Minister
India was the guru of the world and it is time to reclaim that position. We have to strengthen our science, culture and technical education. Apart from overall ranking, we are also releasing the top institutes in specific fields. Our education institutes are moving fast in the international rankings, said HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank.
NIRF ranking will prepare Indian institutes for international rankings, said Sanjay Dhotre. We should also further strengthen the structure of our ranking and ensure that life skills that are beyond the academic knowledge of a candidate should also be a parameter in our ranking. I hope NIRF will get as renowned as QS and THE ranking, he added.
Sanjay Dhotre said, 'congratulations to the institutes which have ranked well but also to those who have participated. Appearing for an exam is the first step towards winning. Those who do not appear for the exam out of fear of failing, fail in the exam of life. It is better to fail and learn than to never to participate. Institutes will be able to assess themselves and be better. Thus, this ranking is very important for all institutes'
