A person who attended Saturday's Black Lives Matter protest in Melbourne, which thousands of others attended, has contracted COVID-19.

The man, who is in his 30s and wore a mask to the protest, developed symptoms in the 24 hours after the demonstration, the state's Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said.

Professor Sutton told reporters at a coronavirus update on Thursday morning that it was unlikely the non-Indigenous man contracted the virus at the demonstration. However, he may have been infectious.

Professor Sutton said the case proved the government's message not to attend the protest. Close contacts who spent more than 15 minutes directly with the person will be told to quarantine.

A staff member at an age care facility in Clayton and a toddler at a childcare centre in Parkville also tested positive. Another case was a close contact of a staff member at Rydges Hotel, taking the size of that outbreak to 15.

Two other cases are under investigation.

More to come.
