Germany well-placed to avoid second wave of virus infections: Minister

Germany is well placed to avoid a second wave of coronavirus infections, finance minister Olaf Scholz said on Friday, warning that the absence of a vaccine meant social distancing as well as testing and tracing measures were necessary. "We are living with the virus, which I describe as a new normal. And it will only change when we have new medical therapies and when we have a vaccine," Scholz said. "As long as this is not the case, we have to organise our lives so as to avoid a second wave."

'Extensive' testing of returnees ups Kolhapur tally

Return of intra-state migrant workers from red zones coupled with "extensive"testing of incoming people led to a spike in coronavirus cases in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra after lockdown relaxations were given in May, officials said on Friday. As on Friday, the district has recorded a total of 708 COVID-19 cases and eight deaths. According to the district administration, of the 708 cases, 601 patients have been discharged from hospitals after recovery.

Since June 1, Gurugram sees 6-fold increase in deaths, cases rise over 3.5 times

Of the nearly 6,000 total cases in Haryana, Gurugram alone accounts for more than 45 per cent and 19 out of the total 64 COVID-19 related deaths in the state. The two other worst-hit districts are — Faridabad and Sonipat, which, like Gurugram, fall in the National Capital Region next to Delhi. Together, these three districts account for more than 4,000 cases and 46 deaths as on June 11.

Covid situation 'horrendous, horrific, pathetic': SC slams Delhi govt

The Supreme Court on Friday slammed the Delhi government on news reports showing deplorable condition of medical wards in Delhi, where dead bodies were not only in wards, but were also found in lobby and waiting areas. The apex court termed the situation in Delhi "horrendous, horrific and pathetic". It slammed the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government for its handling of dead bodies, terming it "very sorry state of affairs".

7 states demand 63 more Shramik Special trains

Of 63 Shramik Special trains demanded by states, maximum 32 will depart from Kerala while destinations of 23 will be Bengal, Railways said. Apart from Kerala, Tamil Nadu demanded 10 Shramik Special trains, followed by Jammu and Kashmir (9), Karnataka (6), Andhra Pradesh (3), West Bengal (2) and Gujarat (1).
