Goa University jumps 12 places in HRD ranking

Panaji: National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development on Thursday announced rankings for nationwide universities and educational institutions in various categories for the year 2020, with the rank of the Goa University rising by 12 places, from the 93rd position, last year to 81st position, this year, in the university category, with score of 41.37.

Two years ago, Goa University stood at the 68th position, while a year earlier in 2017 it was placed at 64th position. This year, GU does not feature in the overall ranking for institutes across disciplines.

The Goa Institute of Management secured 48th rank amongst the top 75 management institutes across India with score 46.63, while the Goa College of Pharmacy was adjudged at the 47th position amongst top 75 pharmacy colleges in India, scoring 42.73.

The National Institute of Technology-Goa secured 77th position in top 200 engineering colleges in the country, with the score 39.93. Three colleges in Goa namely Dhempe College of Arts and Science, Panaji; Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Sakhali; and Ponda Education Society Shri Ravi S Naik College of Arts and Science have managed to find a place in the 151-200 rank band in the India Rankings 2020. 

The report card of the Goa University informs that it has more than 80 per cent of buildings with lifts/ ramps, and has provision for walking aids, including wheelchairs and transportation from one building to another for handicapped students.

In the five parameters of evaluation, the Goa University received scores out of 100 as: Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR) – 55.98, Research and Professional Practice (RP) – 14.14, Graduation Outcomes (GO) – 65.28, Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) – 53.00, and Perception (PR) – 19.82.

Meanwhile, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore with 84.18 score tops in the university list.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has retained its top rank in the overall as well as engineering categories, securing 85.31 and 89.93 scores, respectively.

The ranking framework evaluates institutions on five broad generic groups of parameters namely Teaching, Learning and Resources, Research and Professional Practice, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity, and Perception. The ranks are given on the basis of the total sum of marks assigned for each of these five broad groups of parameters.

The fifth edition of the ranking for the top universities and educational institutions was announced by Union Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal.

These annual rankings are usually announced in April but had to be postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
