Constable Jagmohan SinghMOGA: A Punjab Police constable was killed and two other cops were injured when a resident of a village in Moga district of Punjab opened fire at them from the upper floor of his house on Monday late night when they went to investigate a complaint filed against him by his uncle.
His uncle had alleged that Gurwinder Singh had set on fire the wheat straw that he had kept on the roof of his house in Khosa Pando village. Constable Jagmohan Singh died in the firing, while Moga CIA in charge Tarlochan Singh and head constable Vedam Singh were admitted in a Ludhiana hospital with injuries. Gurwinder too received a gunshot injury while fleeing .
Accused used his mother as a shield to escape
According to police, ASI Boota Singh reached the Gurwinder Singh’s house to investigate the complaint, but Gurwinder did not open the gate and threatened to open firewith a 12bore gun from upper storey of his house. After this, Moga Sadar police station SHO Karamjeet Singh arrived there with additional force, but Gurwinder opened fire at them, however, no one was hurt. The SHO then called his seniors for help.
Then, SP (Investigations) Harinderpal Singh Parmar, DSPJangjit Singh andDSPBarjinder Singh reached the spot. Whilethey weretrying to pacify Gurwinder, he opened fire again. Moga SSP Harmanbir SinghGillsaid,"Thebody of the constable was removed from the spot by giving cover fire from the other side. The accused kept on firing but the policeexercised restraint.Around 4 am, Gurwinder crashed
through the main gate of his house in his white Tata Safari PB-05-0117 using his mother as a shield, and kept on firing at the police team to escape. The police fired at the accused in defence, injuring him."
An injured Gurwinder abandoned his vehicle at Pandori Khattri village and made someone call an ambulance and got admitted at the Moga civil hospital where the police took him in custody. SSP Gill said a case under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) of the IPC and the Arms Act had been registered against him.
Villagers said Gurwinder was depressed, was not on talking terms with his father and used to stay on the upper floor of the house alone. He used the .12 bore licensed gun of his father to open fire at the policemen.
