Monsoon to hit Goa tomorrow

Panaji: Monsoon is likely to reach the state by June 11, as the weather conditions are very likely to become favourable from Wednesday for the onset of monsoon over the state.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the formation of a low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has made the conditions favourable for the onset of monsoon in Goa.

“Under the influence of low pressure area over Bay of Bengal, the wind speed will improve at 40 kmph and as a result, rain too will increase from Wednesday onwards,” an IMD

official said. The normal date of onset of monsoon is June 6. However, this year, it will arrive on June 11.

Three criteria must be fulfilled for declaring the onset of monsoon and these include OLR (Outgoing Longwave Radiation), wind field and rainfall. The weather department has warned of fairly widespread rain with isolated heavy showers and thunderstorms for the next three days.

According to the IMD, if the rainfall on Tuesday night and Wednesday meet the requirements of state average rainfall near to normal value, then the onset would be clear.

On Tuesday, very light to moderate rain/thundershowers occurred at most places over the region.
