Opel's new face will debut on the electric Mokka

    Opel's sketch shows that the electric Mokka's Vizor grille extends in a single sweep across the front of the vehicle underneath the hood.

    The full-electric version of the new Opel/Vauxhall Mokka small SUV will influence the look of the entire Mokka range.

    The Mokka-e will Opel's first model that has the automaker's Vizor grille that links the headlights, grille and brand logo in one flush-fitting module.

    "There is no need for a classic grille in electric cars like the Mokka, so the Vizor creates a seamless integration of future lighting and other technologies, all within a high-tech protective surface," Opel's design chief, Mark Adams, Opel head of design, said in a statement.

    The Mokka-e and new versions of the SUV with conventional combustion engines will go into production in the fourth quarter ahead of deliveries starting in December. Combustion versions also will have an engine-cooling grille below the Vizor fascia, spy shots of disguised prototypes show.

    The Vizor grille design is influenced by the 2018 Opel GT X electric SUV concept, which in turn was influenced by the front end of the Opel Manta coupe from the early 1970s.

    Opel gave the grille the Vizor name to draw comparison with a motorcycle helmet. The company described the design as being "pure, precise and technical" with no superfluous decoration.

    The technical look will be reinforced by the LED headlights that will be standard on all Mokkas, Opel said.

    The Mokka-e will use the same electric drivetrain as the Opel Corsa-e small hatchback and the e-2008 small SUV sold by Peugeot, a sibling brand to Opel in the PSA Group range.

    Those two models use a 50 kilowatt-hour battery mated to a 136-hp electric motor. The e-2008 has a quoted WLTP range of 320 km (200 miles).

    The second-generation Mokka loses the X at the end of its name. It will be sold alongside the smaller Crossland X SUV.
    The new Mokka will "change the perception" of the Opel brand, CEO Michael Lohscheller has said.
