Europe demands better pandemic plan, as Moscow exits lockdown
- Europe's most powerful countries urged the European Union to better prepare for the next pandemic after chaotic responses to the coronavirus, as Moscow emerged from lockdown despite Russia still being in the grip of a surging epidemic.
- Europe has been the hardest-hit continent with nearly 185,000 people killed, and the leaders said a lack of coordination had left nations short of crucial medical equipment when the coronavirus arrived.
Travel bubbles could encase global divisions
- New economic bubbles are blowing. They may be less damaging than ones that irrationally inflate financial markets, but so-called travel bubbles present risks of their own.
- Australia is exploring a “Trans-Tasman” zone with New Zealand, which just declared itself virus-free and lifted all domestic restrictions.

Elevated extreme poverty to persist through 2021: World Bank
- Global economic growth could rebound next year -- but the number of people living in extreme poverty is expected to remain unchanged after a huge surge this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the World Bank warned Tuesday.
- The projection came after the Washington-based development lender said Monday the pandemic could drive between 70 and 100 million people into extreme poverty in 2020 as the global economy faces its worst recession in 80 years.
- Before the pandemic, extreme poverty -- defined as living on $1.90 per day -- had been decreasing.
Brazil resumes publishing virus toll, criticizes WHO
- Brazil's government resumed publishing the country's total death toll from the coronavirus pandemic Tuesday, after facing accusations of trying to hide the magnitude of its raging health crisis.
- Far-right President Jair Bolsonaro's government had stopped publishing the total number of deaths from the new coronavirus Friday, saying it was adopting a new methodology and would only report the number of deaths recorded in the past 24 hours in its daily bulletin.
- That drew accusations of foul play from a long list of high-profile critics, as well as a ruling from Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes on Monday that the government must return to the old format.
US records more than 800 virus deaths in 24 hours
- The coronavirus pandemic killed 819 people in the United States in the past 24 hours, according to figures released Tuesday by Johns Hopkins University.
- There have been a total of 111,751 deaths in the country and 1,973,803 cases of infection, the Baltimore-based institution's real-time tracker reported at 8:30 pm (0030 GMT Wednesday).
- The United States is the country hardest hit by the pandemic in terms of both the number of fatalities and number of cases.
WHO calls for new lockdowns in Pakistan as virus surges
- The World Health Organization has told Pakistan it should implement "intermittent" lockdowns to counter a surge in coronavirus infections that has come as the country loosens restrictions, an official said Tuesday.
- Since the start of Pakistan's outbreak in March, Prime Minister Imran Khan opposed a nationwide lockdown of the sort seen elsewhere, arguing the impoverished country could not afford it.
- Instead, Pakistan's four provinces ordered a patchwork of closures, but last week Khan said most of these restrictions would be lifted
Airlines expected to lose USD 84.3 billion in 2020: IATA
- The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released its financial outlook for the global air transport industry showing that "airlines are expected to lose $84.3 billion in 2020 for a net profit margin of -20.1 per cent".
- According to IATA, revenues will fall 50 per cent to $419 billion from $838 billion in 2019. In 2021, losses are expected to be cut to $15.8 billion as revenues rise to $598 billion.
- "Financially, 2020 will go down as the worst year in the history of aviation. On average, every day of this year will add $230 million to industry losses. In total that's a loss of $84.3 billion," Alexandre de Juniac, IATA's Director General and CEO was quoted as saying.
Largely re-opened, China announces 3 new cases
- With much of the country re-opened under safety measures, China has announced three new confirmed cases of coronavirus, all brought from outside the country.
- No new deaths were reported Wednesday and just 55 people remain in treatment for COVID-19, while another 157 were being monitored in isolation for showing signs of having the virus or having tested positive for it without showing symptoms.
Senior BMC official dies of COVID-19 in Mumbai
- A senior official of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation who had tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday died due to the virus amid surging cases of the disease in Mumbai.
- According to the BMC, the official was deployed in the water supply department.
- "A senior official of BMC who had tested positive for COVID-19 has lost his life. He was deployed in the water supply department," BMC said.
Widespread mask-wearing could prevent second waves
- Population-wide facemask use could push COVID-19 transmission down to controllable levels for national epidemics and could prevent further waves of the pandemic disease when combined with lockdowns, according to a UK study published Wednesday.
- The research, led by scientists at the Britain's Cambridge and Greenwich Universities, suggests lockdowns alone will not stop the resurgence of the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, but that even homemade masks can dramatically reduce transmission rates if enough people wear them in public.
Jharkhand reports 86 new cases
- With 86 new COVID-19 cases in Jharkhand on Tuesday, the total number of cases has reached to 1,416 in the state, Jharkhand Health Department said.
- According to the official data, there are 849 active cases in the state so far.
- "Jharkhand reports 86 fresh COVID-19 positive cases, taking the total number of cases to 1,416. Number of active cases stand at 849," the state Health Department stated.
Mexico confirms nearly 600 new coronavirus deaths
- Mexico's health ministry reported 4,199 new confirmed coronavirus infections and 596 additional fatalities on Tuesday, bringing the total in the country to 124,301 cases and 14,649 deaths.
- The government has said the real number of infected people is significantly higher than the official count.
