GUWAHATI: IIT Guwahati has rolled out its plans to bring back students from the green zone areas to the institute campus in the first round from next week, to become one of the pioneering residential institutions in the country which is going to allow the students to return to the campuses after the announcement of the lockdown.

To begin with, the IIT-G authority will allow entry of the senior-most students- mainly the research scholars doing Ph.D.- to return to the campus next week onwards. But considering the persisting Covid threat, the institute authority has been sending mails to the senior students, first seeking their consent to return to the campus and not compelling them to return. Even as they may belong to a green zone, which is considered safer, all the returning IITians here will have to go through a mandatory quarantine inside the IIT-G campus for 14 days, said Dr. Parameswar Krishnan Iyer, dean of public relations, branding, and ranking at IIT-G.

"In the first round, we have decided to bring back students from the Guwahati city region from where about 150 students are studying in IIT-G. We are not much worried to bring back students from the northeast, who belong to a green zone completely. This is the reason why we are keen to bring back students from the northeast in the initial phases," Iyer told TOI on Tuesday.

He said that IIT-G has completed the mapping of the students who have gone to their homes in different parts of the country during lockdown so that the vulnerability of their areas to Covid-19 could be assessed. From BTech to the Ph.D. level, about 6,000 students are enrolled in IIT-G.

"We have readied a full map which shows that more than 50 percent of our students are not from the green zone. Further, we need more space to quarantine all the returnees for 14 days. That's why we can't open the campus for all students at one go," Iyer added.

He said that IIT-G authority will keep the first batch returnee students in single rooms and they won't have to come to the dining hall for having meals. "During the quarantine period, they won't be able to come outside the campus," Iyer said.

Barring 30-35 international students and the faculty member, about 99 percent of the IIT-G students returned to their homes before the first phase lockdown was announced in March. Even as online classes have been going on for all the students, sources in the institute said that priority has been given on the return of the Ph.D. and seniormost students for whom getting access to the laboratory facility inside the campus is much needed.

"Before the scholarship tenure ends, a research scholar needs to submit the thesis. From outside the campus, they can't get access to many journals and lab facilities. That's why in the first phase, preferences have been given to the research scholars who are on the verge of completing their Ph.D. But it all depends on the willingness of the students to return to the campus," said an IIT-G faculty member.

According to insiders in the institute, many of the students are not yet willing to return to the campus immediately, but those students who need lab facilities under their supervisors have given ascent to return.
