A popular festival has been forced to cancel due to coronavirus restrictions.

The Adani Rockhampton River Festival in central Queensland is the latest event to fall victim to the COVID-19 pandemic, with organisers announcing the cancellation of the festival on Tuesday.

'We have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Adani Rockhampton River Festival due to COVID-19 restrictions and the impact this will have on delivering the event,' a statement on their Facebook page reads.

The three day culture, arts, music and food celebration is the largest winter festival in central Queensland, attracting more than 100,000 attendees every year.

Organisers have shifted their focus to the 2021 edition of the festival, which will run pending coronavirus restrictions from July 9-11 next year.

'This event will be a community celebration of resilience and creativity showing support for the food, beverage and performing arts industries,' the statement continues.

'We recognise the importance of Rockhampton River Festival to the local economy, community and most of all our valued supporters and understand how disappointing this cancellation is.'

'We look forward to working with all stakeholders toward delivering an outstanding event in 2021.

'We wish all River Festival supporters well during these very difficult times and we look forward to welcoming you back in 2021.'

The festival joins a wealth of other popular events forced to cancel due to the outbreak of coronavirus.

The Gympie Music Muster was cancelled for the first time in 40 years from the pandemic, along with Sydney's Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in it's 25 year anniversary.

Vivid Sydney, Anzac Day events and Bluesfest were cancelled, while Woodford Folk Festival director Bill Hauritz said event organisers will make the call on whether their end of year event will go ahead in Queensland in late July.

Other Australian festivals have taken extreme measures to run their events, with Splendour in the Grass changing the festival dates to run in October, while Falls Festival will have an all Australian lineup for their New Years Eve festivities.
