Melbourne shivers through coldest June morning in years

School's in, pubs are open and footy's back. If you needed any more proof of winter settling in, it arrived this morning in sub-zero temperatures across the suburbs and the state.

Melburnians shivered through the city's coldest morning since August 2018 and the coldest June morning since 2015, while temperatures dipped below zero in much of Victoria.

On the edge of Melbourne, Coldstream dipped to -3.6 degrees just after 6am. In the suburbs, Viewbank plunged to -0.3 degrees, Scoresby reached 0.2 degrees and Essendon Airport hit 0.6 degrees.

Temperatures plunged below zero in every regional district. Omeo was the coldest spot in Victoria reaching -4.6 degrees and Mount Hotham wasn't far behind notching -3.4 degrees.

Michael Halfpenny, senior forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology, said the sun would bring warmth from around 9am when frost begins to clear.

Light northerly winds between 15 to 20 km/h later this morning will become lighter in the evening.

"The day will be quite pleasant once we get past the cold start – it will be 15 degrees and sunny," he said.

"There was some cloud cover last night but it cleared away rapidly which allowed the temperature to drop."

For the remainder of the week, Melbourne's maximum temperatures will hover between 15-17 degrees and rain is forecast on the weekend.
