It’s easy to lose track of time when doing something that you enjoy, such as driving the new Audi RS7 Sportback in Morocco’s amazing mountain roads.
Rory Reid was is northern Africa to review the executive super sedan, and after many hours of going hard on the throttle, the car displayed the gas pump sign on the digital dials, alongside the ‘please refuel immediately’ warning message.
Most of us would panic at this point, but this was a press car, and all the ex-Top Gear co-presenter had to do was contact the Audi rep, who would come to the rescue. However, as it turned out, there was nothing that they could do, other than point him to the nearest gas station, which was 50 miles (80 km) away.
Mind you, the car was already displaying the ‘zero fuel’ message, and we’re taking about a V8-powered model, with two turbochargers and 4.0 liters in displacement. It develops a whopping 592 HP (600 PS / 441 kW) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque, matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission and quattro permanent all-wheel drive system. This translates into a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) of 3.6 seconds and a top speed of up to 190 mph (305 km/h) with the optional Dynamic Plus package.
As bonkers as it may be, the 2020 RS7 Sportback does feature a cylinder deactivation system that allows it to run on only four cylinders to save fuel, and it also packs a mild-hybrid setup. But was this actually enough to get it to the gas station or was it a ridiculous attempt to even consider driving it that far while running on fumes?
