Jamshedpur: Even as business establishments, private and government offices get back to a new normal in Unlock 1.0, principals, teachers and parents here are not in favour of reopening schools any time soon.
Talking to TOI on Monday, the former principal of Jamshedpur Public School, Lalita Sareen, said, “How can the Centre or the state government think of reopening the schools when a vaccine for Covid-19 has not been invented yet. Kids cannot be expected to follow social distancing norms in schools. "
Many took to social media to express their concern on opening schools in the current situation. “How can one open schools and play with the lives of thousands of students,” Padmawati, a science teacher at Jamshedpur Public School, wrote on Facebook.
Another science teacher named Samarpita Biswas said, “Opening schools will put the lives of teachers at risk as well. My class has 57 students. How will school authorities plan social distancing in such a situation.”
Kakoli Mukherjee, another teacher, said, “Students’ lives are more important than an academic year loss. Schools cannot open in such a scenario.”
Shukla Mahanty, former VC of Kolhan University and presently principal of Jamshedpur Women's College, Shukla talking to TOI said:"Opening of schools before total eradication of Covid would spell doom." She added things will just go beyond control and questioned who will take the responsibility of that.
Vice-principal of Valley View School and senior physics teacher Shubhendu Mazumdar too felt that at this stage opening schools would not be a right decision till Covid vaccine is out and government declares country is pandemic free.
Purabi Chakraborty voicing her anger over Facebook page said:"In normal circumstances schools now a days shy away from taking responsibility, leave alone such a serious thing like social distancing and other new SOP on the campus." Purabi recalled how her son had earlier sustained injuries in school and the authorities waited for parents to turn up and take the child to hospital.
She said come what may she will not send his son till government formally announces Covid is over and out.
Payal Das, another concerned mother, on her Facebook page pointed out how schools were opened in Israel and students became Covid victims. She too was reluctant to send her daughter to school in this circumstance.
