Pune: The students pursuing PhDs and M.Phils from Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) and accredited research centres will their have oral exams through video conferencing. A circular has been already issued about the oral exams online in the wake of the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Education departments of all the universities, research centres of the affiliated colleges will remain closed from till June 30 but the university authorities have ordered to complete all the educational work through online or other mediums as per the requirements.

Before the lockdown announced in March, all the research work of students in universities and research centres was completed. The dates for the oral examinations were already issued but were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As per the guidelines issued by the University Grants Commission, oral exams will be conducted by video conferencing. Accordingly, universities have ordered all the research centres to develop necessary systems. Educational admission department has clarified that guides of students must update “PhD tracking system”.

Earlier Maharashtra State Government announced the cancellation of exams for all the years but later, Governor of the state announced that the state will conduct exams. Students have opposed this move on social media. Many have tweeted with #StuendentLivesMatter. Students mostly from Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have commented on social media handles.

MEDICAL STUDENTS WON’T BE PROMOTED

Maharashtra University of Health Science (MUHS) will not be promoting medical students, unlike other conventional universities. Students have requested to cancel their examinations in the backdrop of COVID-19. MUHS is planning to conduct examinations later but there is no plan of cancelling the examinations.
