Covid-19 infections crossed the 2.6-lakh mark on Tuesday, a day after the country ended its two-month lockdown.

The world’s second-most populous nation added 9,987 fresh cases in the 24 hours preceding the Health Ministry’s 8 a.m. update on June 9, taking the total tally to 2,66,598. This includes 7,466 deaths and 1,29,215 patients who have recovered.

Authorities reported 266 deaths and 4,785 recoveries during the same 24 hours.

Key Numbers

  • Total confirmed cases: 2,66,598
  • Number of fresh cases in last 24 hours: 9987
  • Total number of active cases: 1,29,917
  • Total patients cured/discharged/migrated: 1,29,215
  • Total deaths: 7,466

Indian authorities have reported more than 9,000 fresh cases for the sixth straight day, with the latest figure showing the country’s largest spike.

Even as confirmed cases continue to mount in India, the process of lifting the lockdown began yesterday.

Malls, restaurants and religious places will be open as the government aims to revive the economy that’s headed for its first full-year contraction in more than four decades. India was already growing at its slowest pace in over a decade when the virus struck. The lockdown, effective March 25, made it worse, stalling all business activity.

States like West Bengal and Maharashtra extended the lockdown till June 30, but with certain relaxations for business operations in place.

Global Update

Lockdowns and other public-health measures may have prevented about a half-billion coronavirus infections in six countries, including China and the U.S., according to the first peer-reviewed analysis of the impact of health policies on the pandemic. The World Health Organization said transmission of the virus by people who aren’t showing symptoms is “rare.” The genetic-testing company 23andMe found that blood type may play a role in who is susceptible.

Cases pass 7 million; deaths exceed 405,000.

Some Labs Took 18 Days To Submit Swab Reports: BMC Chief

Some laboratories in Mumbai took as many as 18 days to deliver swab reports related to coronavirus cases, BMC Commissioner IS Chahal has said.

The senior IAS officer, who took over as commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation last month, said after he joined the post, he found that swab reports of April 4 were delivered on April 22.

"Some labs were committing serious crime by submitting reports 18 days later. They deserved to be punished for late reporting," Chahal told a TV channel on Monday.
