Have you downloaded the Arogya Setu app? Have you travelled anywhere in the last 15 days? How old are you?: These were a few questions every customer who visited shopping malls on Monday had to answer. People were allowed in only after they entered their name, phone number and travel history in a register.

However, not many customers showed up on the first day. When BM checked, a few people said they had come just to check which stores have opened. “We did not come for shopping today. We just thought of checking what would open in a mall,” said Siddharth and his wife, who were at Gopalan Arcade Mall on Mysore Road.

Supermarkets and a few boutiques were open but eateries and multiplexes stayed shut.

Arun Selvaraj, facility manager at the mall, said that all precautions are being taken on par with the Centre’s guidelines. Entry to malls flaunted stickers signalling where to stand in queue. Customers were sprayed with disinfectants or told to walk through a disinfectant tunnel. While going to the parking lot, vehicle tyres are being sprayed with disinfectants, Selvaraj added.

Air conditioning systems were switched off at a few malls. Only blowers were on, controlling the temperature between 24 and 30 degree Celsius. Others had AC switched on at a high temperature. Customers over 60 years and below 10 years were not allowed. If they wanted essentials, the mall staff was helping them get it.

Staff, who have been trained on Covid-19 duties, have a separate entrance and all malls have asked them to give a declaration that they would not come to the mall if they are unwell or have travelled out of the district, state or country. Social distancing rules are followed at the washrooms too, with alternate sinks and urinals sealed off.

At the Gopalan Legacy mall, a quarantine room had been arranged where PPE, a cot, and a dustbin are placed. “This room is for any customer who might feel restless all of a sudden or experience shortness of breath. They will be attended to by an on-call doctor,” said Ramesh H, mall manager, Gopalan Legacy mall.
