MUMBAI: A constable of the Valiv police station in Vasai (east) succumbed to
Covid-19 on Tuesday. This is the first case of a cop dying of the virus in
Palghar district.
He (40) was first admitted to the Bhimsen Joshi government hospital in Bhayander. On June 1 he was shifted to a private hospital in Nalasopara. He had joined the force in 2003. So far 33 cops, including two officers, in the district have tested positive for Covid-19.
Police officers from the district paid homage to the victim. On Monday, a 50-bed dedicated Covid-19 centre had become operational in Wada taluka of Palghar district.
Cops are amongst the frontline warriors who are affected by Covid-19. In Maharashtra, the death of police personnel has touched 35, including 21 in Mumbai.
Positive cases in the district have reached 1,301 and includes 45 deaths.
