The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) sent a letter of appreciation to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for providing timely information and accurate prediction of the cyclone ‘Amphan.’
IMD tweeted the letter of appreciation today with the caption, “IMD received an appreciation letter from WMO for accurate prediction and timely information dissemination during cyclone Amphan."
In a letter dated June 2 addressed to IMD Director General Mrutunjay Mohapatra, WMO Secretary-General E Manaenkova thanked the IMD for sharing advisory bulletins every three hours during the cyclone ‘Amphan.’
“The advisory bulletins were distributed to all Members of the WMO/ESCAP panels on Tropical Cyclones, in particular Bangladesh, to provide accurate and consistent forecasting information from genesis until the demise of the super cyclone ‘Amphan,’” the letter read.
The advisories were also well utilised by other entities of WMO including the WMO Secretariat in Geneva. These advisories enabled the UN agency to alert other agencies to take preventive steps in a timely manner.
Amphan had intensified into a super cyclonic storm impacting West Bengal and the Sunderbans at a large scale in May.
The IMD through the Regional Specialised Meteorological Centre for Tropical Cyclones provides information on Tropical Cyclones to all the related countries in the North Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, and the Bay of Bengal.
