CHENNAI: Former Union health minister and PMK leader
Anbumani Ramadoss on Monday demanded that the
Tamil Nadu government create infrastructure to treat people who test positive for
Covid-19 instead of advising them to
home quarantine themselves.
Expressing concern over the “the uncontrolled spread” of the virus in the state, Anbumani said, “Shocked to learn that people who tested positive for Covid-19 are advised home quarantine. It will pave the way for the spread of the virus further and infect their family members instead of helping the
patients recover.”
“It is undeniable that many Covid-19 patients are using common toilets with family members and public toilets and it is the main reason for the spread of the virus,” said the Rajya Sabha member.
On May 8, there were a total of 6,009 Covid-19 cases in the state. Within a month, on June 7, a total of 25,658 new cases were reported, taking the total tally to 31,667. Of these, 19,106 cases were recorded in Chennai, Anbumani said in a press statement.
“If appropriate measures had been taken, we would have avoided an increase in the number of cases. But we have failed in it, creating panic among the public from stepping out of their house in Chennai,” he said.
He said handling of Covid-19 patients and the way of treatment provided to them were turning into a cause of concern.
China had contained the spread of virus by taking several effective measures such as creating exclusive facilities to treat the infected people, he said and urged the TN government to take over all the colleges, hostels, marriage halls, indoor stadiums and convert them into Covid-19 care centres.
The infected people should be shifted to these facilities instead of sending them home. They should also provide quality care and food, he said.
