Prison guards have been forced to use tear gas after a fight broke out between two inmates at a notorious Sydney jail.

The fight broke out in a prison yard of the Long Bay Correctional Complex in Matraville in the city's south-east about 12.30pm on Monday.

Rows of inmates were seen in aerial footage lying down with their hands cuffed behind their backs flanked by guards in riot gear.

Corrective Services New South Wales said the tear gas canisters were used to control the inmates, before they were handcuffed and taken back inside the prison building.

Other aerial footage showed guards throwing canisters being thrown over a fence by guards, sending thick gas billowing into the air.

'The incident started about midday when a number of inmates in one yard began fighting,' a Corrective Services spokeswoman said.

'Other inmates refused to obey officers’ directions and allow staff to go into that yard and stop the fight. Gas was deployed to safely secure those inmates.'

Gas was then used in other two yards after inmates there also started refusing staff directions.

One inmate was taken to hospital after being bitten by a prison dog when he refused to drop a jail-made weapon, the spokeswoman said.

Residents in the nearby area reported burning in their eyes and throats, ABC News reported.

They also said they could hear prisoners being told to sit down on the prison's fence line by security staff.

High-profile inmates at the jail include ex-NSW police detective Roger Rogerson - who is serving life in prison for murdering 21-year-old drug dealer Jamie Gao.

Gang rapist Bilal Skaf, the ringleader of the notorious Skaf gang, is serving time at Long Bay after being given a record 55-year jail term for his crimes.
