REVEALED: Consumer experts share the six items you shouldn't buy in the End of Financial Year sales

  • The end of financial year sales are a great time to purchase new items for less
  • But CHOICE has revealed the top products buyers should avoid purchasing
  • They sampled fridges, TV sets, washing machines, dishwashers and vacuums
  • After testing certain products, experts say some items simply 'aren't worth it'

The experts from Australian consumer company CHOICE have revealed the top six products to avoid purchasing during this year's end of financial year sales.

While it's often difficult to pass up a good bargain, experts say some products simply 'aren't worth it'.

CHOICE sampled and tested certain household appliances to determine which ones don't make the cut.

They tested fridges, televisions, washing machines, dish washers and robotic vacuum cleaners.

Fridges

During the numerous rounds of testing, the fridge that didn't meet CHOICE's performance and functionality standard was the Beko 450 litre Bottom Mount Fridge BBM450W.

While the product is decently priced at $1149, it failed to keep the food cool and fresh.

'Not only did it fail the energy check, it also scored zero per cent on our temperature stability test,' the CHOICE testers wrote.

CHOICE's whitegoods expert Ashley Iredale also said: 'You might think you're saving money now, but a poorly performing fridge means your food won't last as long, costing you a motza in replacing perishables prematurely for the entire life of the fridge, which can be more than ten years.'

Television sets

For the price of $298, the FFalcon 40F1 40 inch Full HD television sounds like a great deal, but CHOICE's expert testers weren't impressed with both the sound and picture quality.

After the picture test, the television scored 51 per cent for standard definition picture quality and 56 per cent for high definition picture quality.

For sound quality the product scored only 45 per cent, and so experts recommend looking elsewhere if buyers are seeking a new TV.

Washing machines

If buyers are considering purchasing a washing machine, CHOICE recommends avoiding the Speed Queen AWNA62 and Haier HWX8040DW1.

The Speed Queen AWNA62 top loader is priced at $2695 and while the product has a high speed, experts say it doesn't clean clothes properly.

The product also has very poor water efficiency, no auto-sensing water level, no selectable spin speed, no time remaining display and no option to wash woollen items.

The $2499 Haier HWX8040DW1 front loader also scored low on the dirt removal test with 55 per cent but gained 63 per cent after the spin efficiency test.

Compared to the Speed Queen, the Haier has better water efficiency and is 'relatively quiet' when in use, Choice explained.

Robotic Vacuum Cleaners

While robotic vacuum cleaners are still popular among customers, CHOICE recommends avoid purchasing the Kogan EasyClean R10 Robot Vacuum.

'This Kogan robot vacuum only has one job, but it doesn't manage to do it well at all,' CHOICE wrote.

CHOICE said the vacuum is inefficient at cleaning hard floors, carpets, edges, corners and picking up pet hair.

'The only thing it could manage to navigate was tassels on rugs, which is all well and good if you're after clean floor rug tassels, but not much help if you actually want clean floors,' CHOICE said.

Dishwashers

The final product CHOICE experts recommend steering clear from is the Omega ODW101W dishwasher, priced at $599.

CHOICE said the 'only nice thing' the experts said about the household appliance is that it's cheap to run.

But the dishwasher scored only 35 per cent for drying and 63 per cent for washing, and said the product is 'very light on features'.
