Davanagere: Fearing mounting debts, a 65-year-old farmer from Kambada Devatti village in Holalkere taluk of Chitradurga district has committed suicide by consuming poison.
The deceased is Dasappa K. He had reportedly borrowed a loan of Rs 2.70 lakh from SBI (Holalkere branch) and Rs 1.10 lakh from Pragathi Grameena Bank (Holalkere) and had purchased a tractor for Rs 4.50 lakh through the loan taken from Mahindra Finance (Chitradurga).
But due to the lack of rain in the last two years, his crops failed, pushing him to depression over the debts. Depressed, he consumed poison late on Saturday night at his house. Noticing him wreathing in pain, his family members rushed him to Holalkere taluk government hospital, where he succumbed in the early hours of Sunday. Holalkere police are investigating the case.
Mom-son duo dies in accident
A woman and her son were killed on the spot after the car in which they were travelling collided against a truck in Hiriyur Rural police station limits on Sunday evening.
The deceased are Suvarnamma, 56, and her son Ramu, 35, residents of Nandihalli in Chitradurga taluk. The speeding truck is said to have hit their car near Adivala village in Hiriyur taluk on NH-4. Three others who travelling in the car were injured, police said.
A case has been booked at Hiriyur Rural police station. Further investigation is on.
