The Covid-19 death toll in South Africa has topped 1 000 after a further 82 deaths were reported on Monday evening by Minister of Health Zweli Mkhize.
According to a statement by the minister, the death toll rose to 1 080, which translated to a mortality rate of 2.1%.
"Regrettably, we report a further 82 Covid-19 related deaths; 55 from the Western Cape, 26 from the Eastern Cape and one from KwaZulu-Natal," Mkhize said in the statement.
"We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased."

Of all the deaths recorded as of 8 June, 27.7% were aged between 60-69, 24.2% were aged between 50-59 and 18.6% were between the ages of 70 and 79.
On the lower end of the mortality statistics, only 0.2% of the recorded victims were aged 0 to 9, 0.3% were aged 10 to 19, and 1.3% of the deaths were in the age group 20-29.
According to the statement, there have been 26 099 recoveries to date.
Number of cases
The number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 also increased, with a further 2 594 cases reported, for a total of 50 879 cases recorded in South Africa as of Monday.

Testing
As of 8 June, 943 059 tests have been conducted, an increase of 22 983 tests conducted in the last 24 hours.
Of the tests conducted, 48% have been in private facilities and 52% in public laboratories.
