GUWAHATI: To share the burden of parents who have been hit by the Covid-19 lockdown, the Assam government on Sunday announced that all upcoming admissions in government institutions from Class XII to the postgraduate level and technical institutes, including medical and engineering colleges, will be completely free of cost.

In addition, the government will also reimburse Rs 1000 to students staying in hostels. This money will be credited under the hostel mess dues for 12 months, besides an additional Rs 1,000 being reimbursed to be spent for buying textbooks. "Earlier we have been offering free admission for students coming from families whose annual income is less than Rs 2 lakh. Under the present situation, every parent has been affected by the pandemic and so this time the admission will be free for all, without any conditional income slab," Assam education and finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

According to the earlier free admission policy, nearly 50% of a fresh batch of students taking admission used to be benefitted.

The admission for the new session in all higher education institutions starts from next month. Admission to engineering colleges through different entrance exams, to medical course through NEET and to polytechnics will follow soon after.

Sarma underlined that every government institution has to strictly abide by this free admission announcement. "Totally free means absolutely free. The student only has to fill up the form and take admission as per the merit list without paying anything. No institution can ask for any fee, not even for the prospectus, or under any other heads like library fee or magazine fee. The prospectus will be made available for free," he said.

"This step is to give relief to parents, all of who have been affected financially in these trying times. This time every student, no matter whichever course he or she is applying to, will have to give their bank account number and the IFSC of their bank's branch in the admission form so that the reimbursement for their hostel mess dues and textbook expenditure can be deposited," Sarma added.
