Pune sessions court on Saturday granted anticipatory bail to deputy mayor of Solapur and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rajesh Dilip Kale in connection with a cheating case registered against him. But a senior police inspector and police sub-inspector of Sangvi police station had to pay for their alleged negligence in the matter. Pimpri-Chinchwad police commissioner Sandip Bishnoi has taken action against the duo who was found guilty of oversight.

Police sub-inspector (PSI) Ravindra Panhale of Sangvi police station has been suspended and senior police inspector (SI) Dnyaneshwar Sable, in charge of the police station, has been attached to the control room, for seemingly helping Kale during the investigation.

Kale and a former bank manager Nita Suresh Lotte were booked under sections 420 (cheating) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in May 2019. According to the complaint lodged by Sindhu Subhash Chavan, Kale and his accomplices sold a flat to several people and committed financial fraud. Sangvi police detained Kale and brought him to Sangvi police station for inquiry. During the interrogation, the deputy mayor apparently started sneezing and coughing and was released on medical grounds fearing that he might have contracted coronavirus. As a result, Sable and Panhale came under the scanner and an inquiry was ordered against the two officers.

Talking about the incident, additional commissioner of police Ramnath Pokale said, “The two officers were found guilty prima facie in the matter. We have been conducting a detailed probe into the case, which will decide the future course of action. The offence is old and investigation is on. Earlier we had arrested another accused in connection with the scam.”

After Sangvi police released Kale, he immediately filed an anticipatory bail application before Pune sessions court. Advocate Prashant Jadhav, who represented Kale, said, “There is no custodial interrogation required as nothing is to be recovered from the accused. He would not abscond and remain present for inquiry.”

The court granted Kale’s bail plea on a condition that he shall remain present before the investigation officer every Sunday.
