GMDA to restart work on two key junctions in city

Gurgaon: With a gradual increase in traffic after the lockdown, GMDA has decided to resume its mobility projects. The first two projects will be the redevelopment of Mayfield Garden Chowk and Bakhtawar Chowk, aimed at reducing the congestion at these two junctions during peak hours.
The redevelopment of these two junctions was also proposed in GMDA’s draft mobility plan. As a part of the redevelopment plan, the length of the slip roads on both the junctions will be increased.
“At Bakhtawar Chowk, the length of the slip road going towards Huda City Centre will be increased by 100-150 metres so that the commuters wanting to go left will not have to wait at the signals...,” said J S Sindhu, engineer, traffic, mobility wing, GMDA.
Similarly, the length of the slip road at Mayfield Garden Chowk going towards Nirvana Country will also be increased so that those going left do not have to wait for the signal to turn green. Sindhu said that this will help them cut down the congestion at the two junctions.
As a part of the project, the zebra crossings will also be upgraded for the benefit of pedestrians. “We will take the zebra crossing closer to the junctions and connect them with all the four footpaths. Besides the zebra crossings on all four roads will be connected making it easier for the pedestrians to cross the road all directions,” said Sindhu.
GMDA will repair the footpaths on both junctions and cycling tracks will also be marked. Officials said that the trial for the projects was done around eight months back. GMDA has floated the tenders for both the projects and is expecting to allot the tenders by this month end.
Meanwhile, discussions are also under way on other mobility projects. For instance, installation of automatic traffic management systems on select stretches in the city. “We want to ensure that these projects are implemented well in time so that there are no jams or snarls when the city starts seeing pre-lockdown traffic levels. In this regard, we are constantly monitoring the traffic through the Integrated Command and Control Centre,” said a senior GMDA official.
