Taxis seen on a busy Mumbai road on MondayMUMBAI : The Mumbai Taximen's Union has dashed off a letter to the traffic police demanding to know why action is being taken against cabbies plying passengers to and from railway stations when the government has permitted it.
"Two passengers have been allowed to be ferried in taxis. Despite the order, police have seized the taxis while the cabbies were returning (in empty taxis) after leaving the passengers at airports, railway terminals or hospitals. Why should they be penalised?" asked union leader AL Quados.
An RTO official said that the cabbies were allowed to ferry passengers to and from five railway stations where long-distance trains are arriving and departing from Mumbai. This includes CSMT, Dadar, LTT, Bandra Terminus and Mumbai Central. They can carry maximum two passengers in a five-seater taxi.
