7 Jun 2020 by Mark Caswell

Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air has taken delivery of the first of 65 A320 neos.

The aircraft is the 122nd in the airline’s all-Airbus fleet, which consists of A320-200s, A320 neos, A321-200s and A321 neos.

In total Wizz Air has a total of 267 A320 neo Family aircraft on order, including 20 A321 XLRs due for delivery from 2023.

The carrier says that it operates the youngest fleet “among low-cost airlines with at least 100 aircraft”, with an average aircraft age of 5.43 years.

Wizz Air says that its order book will enable the carrier to reduce its environmental footprint by 30 per cent per passenger until 2030.

The airline recently announced plans to launch an Abu Dhabi subsidiary, with flights initially operating from the UAE capital to five European cities (Bucharest, Budapest, Cluj-Napoca, Katowice and Sofia).

The carrier was also among the first to resume flights from the UK following the coronavirus crisis, and this week announced plans to relaunch services from Luton to the Spanish destinations of Malaga, Mallorca, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.

Commenting on the A320 neo delivery József Váradi, Wizz Air’s chief executive officer, said:

“We are delighted to add another ultra- modern aircraft type to our ever-growing fleet. This new aircraft is a true symbol of our ULCC business model by delivering significant cost advantages as well as further lowering Wizz Air’s emissions.

“Our state-of-the-art fleet, now including the first Airbus A320neo aircraft, as well as our enhanced protective measures will ensure the best possible sanitary conditions for travellers.

“Wizz Air is the lowest cost producer in Europe operating the youngest and economically most efficient fleet of aircraft with the lowest environmental footprint.”
