Covid-19: Gujarat adds 480 positive cases, 30 deaths in 24 hours; tally at 20,097, death toll at 1,249

AHMEDABAD: With 480 new cases, Gujarat crossed 20,000 total positive cases on Sunday with tally at 20,097. Out of new cases, 318 were from Ahmedabad, 64 from Surat, 35 from Vadodara and 19 from Gandhinagar.
With the addition on Sunday, Ahmedabad district’s total cases have reached to 14,285. It was fifth consecutive day for the state where 480 or more daily positive cases were recorded. In June, it’s third time that Ahmedabad’s daily tally crossed 300 cases.
Ahmedabad district crossed landmark of deaths of 1,000 Covid-19 positive patients on Sunday, becoming only second district in India to do so. With 21 deaths in 24 hours ending 5 pm on Sunday, Ahmedabad had added 23 deaths, taking the toll to 1015.
The state recorded death of 30 Covid-19 positive patients in 24 hours, taking the death toll to 1249. Apart from 21 deaths in Ahmedabad, two were from Surat and one each from Banaskantha, Bharuch, Gandhinagar, Panchmahal, Mehsana and Rajkot districts.
In a press meet with a panel of doctors created by the state government for advise on Covid-19 epidemic on Sunday, city-based cardiologist Dr Tejas Patel said that the state does have high death rate compared to a few other states. “But we don’t have exact reason for the same. It’s not an isolated phenomenon though – even in Europe, Germany has lower death rate compared to Italy. Multiple factors are at play,” he said.
Gujarat recorded discharge of 319 patients, taking the total to 13,643. The patients included 223 from Ahmedabad, 36 from Surat, 25 from Vadodara, and seven each from Gandhinagar and Surendranagar.
With the statistics for Sunday, Gujarat now has 25.9% (5205) Covid-19 active cases, 67.9% (13,643) patients discharged and 6.2% (1249) patients dead.
The number of persons under quarantine in Gujarat got reduced to 2.11 lakh. Out of total, 2.04 lakh are under home quarantine, said state health department officials.
