A video has been leaked on social media where a police constable in Jodhpur, Rajasthan is seen kneeling down on a man’s neck and pinning him down to the ground for not wearing a mask.

The video was recorded on Thursday, where it shot a man named Mukesh Kumar Prajapat, 40 was roaming outside without wearing a mask which has been declared a compulsory accessory in view of the deadly coronavirus pandemic. According to the police officials, after the two constables noticed the man without the mask, they charged him about his negligence and then hauled him. He even took away the mobile phone of a policeman who questioned him for not wearing the facemask.

But the man turned hostile towards the policemen and tried to hit them up, he even refused to pay a fine for not wearing a facemask in a public place and attempted to run away which outraged the policemen who tried to stop him.

The incident has brought back the horrifying memories of an event in the USA similar to this where an African-American lost his life. George Floyd from Houston experienced a custodial death as white policeman thrashed and pressed the man’s neck with his knees as he faced a shortage of breath. This incident generated brutal protests in the US where people have been engaging in arguments related to systemwide racism.

Indian Express quoted Jodhpur’s DCP(West) Priti Chandra as saying, “The person was without a mask… If someone is not wearing a mask, then corona will spread fast. So a constable clicked the person’s photo when he was not wearing a mask. And when the constable approached him and inquired why he was not wearing a mask, the person immediately pulled up a mask and threatened them that he will gouge their eyes.”

“So the policemen called for a jeep from the police station, but before it could arrive the man started slapping and punching both the constables — there are videos of the same. We have filed an FIR against him and arrested him,” she added.

Jodhpur police officials stated that the man allegedly has two pending cases against him, one lodged by his own father last year in June, for piercing his eye with a screwdriver.

The video shows the man turning violent and involving in a fistfight with the police officials, the video also focused on the policeman who was kneeling down on his neck to take back his phone.

As soon the policemen released him, he started bashing them. DCP was quoted as saying, “Dono constables daba ke baithenge isko, maar thori khayenge (Both constables will subdue him, they would not be beaten up).”

“If a policeman is being slapped and punched while in uniform then it is embarrassing for the entire society. I feel the society should be mature enough to realise that if a man is in uniform then it shouldn’t mean that the person should be criticised without a reason…” the DCP added.

Jodhpur police have put him into custody but haven't taken action against the police constables yet. They called their action “unintentional and spontaneous.”

ACP Neeraj Sharma said, “We arrested him and sent him to judicial custody.”

According to Sharma, Kumar was spotted by two police constables at Pahla Pulia on Thursday where he was not wearing a facemask. They questioned him and requested him to pay a fine on which the man turned violent and started abusing the constables.

The ACP added that the man was aggressive and refused to cooperate with the constables. When they tried to defy him, he fell down and it was “a spontaneous turn of things.”

However, the video has gone viral on social media and netizens have expressed their rage against the policemen and disgraced their way of handling situations.
