India’s tally of coronavirus cases stood at 2,46,549 late on Saturday night, having overtaken Spain’s count of 2.41,310 during the course of the day. Now, only the US (19,06,060 cases), Brazil (6,14,941), Russia (4,58,102) and the UK (2,86,294) have recorded higher number of cases.
India’s total Covid-19 caseload went past Spain’s on Saturday to become the fifth largest in the world, on a day when fresh infections in the country crossed 10,000 for the first time. As many as 297 deaths were reported, the highest single-day toll from the virus so far.
This new kit is part of the three Covid-19 testing kits being developed by IIT-H. While this kit was developed within a week, the other two will take about three to six months. The device has been sent to Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, and the National Institute of Biologicals, Pune, for evaluation

Researchers at IIT Hyderabad have developed an artificial intelligence-powered low-cost testing kit to detect the novel coronavirus in 20 minutes flat. The cost of Covid-19 test using the new kit will be around Rs 600 only, while each test is currently being conducted for Rs 4,500. Mass production of the new kit will help reduce the test cost further to around Rs 350.

The analysis shows that when the number of infected becomes equal to those removed from circulation by recovery and death, the coefficient will reach the 100 per cent threshold and the epidemic will be "extinguished". The analysis, published in the online journal Epidemiology International, has been done by Dr Anil Kumar, Deputy director General (Public Health) in the DGHS, and Rupali Roy, Deputy Assistant Director (Leprosy) DGHS in the health ministry.
