Having set the scene for this eerie outback experience of the Cold War, the Maralinga drama maintains its steady pace. The cracks in the armour of British arrogance appear in three characters in particular – James Cromwell’s General “Cranky”, aptly monikered given the meaning of his nickname at the time was crazy, not grumpy; and the bigwigs whose love dare not speak its name. To the creak of the Geiger counter, disaster looms on many fronts.

Going all Natural Born Killers, this intalment of the Julian McMahon fugitive drama delves into the minds of the young and murderously psychopathic. It should come as no surprise who is to blame for the young man’s ritualistic slayings. The tired synopsis doesn’t quite justify its violence, especially given the undemanding nature of the crime solving. With clues neatly laid out, the crime fighters can concentrate on making the best of their stodgy lines while waiting for a better plot.

It’s all kinds of awkward at the blind auditions when a former Australian reality talent show winner walks up to the mic and no one can remember her name. Perhaps unkindly, her appearance is preceded by a pre-recorded segment in which the judges grimly warn of the perils of not matching talent with hard work. It’s a sly dig in a show that is otherwise kind and supportive of its failures. Also in the spotlight are some unusual singers who win hearts if not turned chairs.
