With 139 deaths on Friday, Maharashtra continued to report a highest single-day surge in the number of COVID-19 fatalities, jumping the death toll to 2,894.

There are no signs of the graph flattening the curve in the state with state reporting a continuous rise in a number of deaths from last week. The second-highest number of deaths in one day stood at 123 on Thursday.

Maharashtra, the worst-hit state also surpassed the forbidding mark of 80,000 COVID-19 cases since the crisis. There are currently 80,229 coronavirus patients in the state. Talking about the case count, Maharashtra is lightly followed by southern state Tamil Nadu which has more than 28,000 cases with 200 deaths.

According to the health department, over 35,156 patients have recovered so far.

Of the 139 deaths reported on Friday, 54 were from Mumbai, trailed by Thane at 30, Pune and Jalgaon at 14 each, Malegaon at eight, Kalyan-Dombivali at seven, Ratnagiri at five, Solapur and Nashik at two each and Aurangabad, Vasai-Virar and Bhiwandi at one each.

Mumbai, an epicentre for the infection solely has 46,080 confirmed cases. Active cases in Mumbai are at 25,768, while the death tally at 1,519. The tally of Dharavi, Mumbai's biggest slum which is worst affected, jumped to 1,889 on Friday. However, no new death was reported in the area and the total is now at 71.

Meanwhile, India's coronavirus cases have raised past 2.26 lakh today after states added more than 9,000 new cases in one day. The total number of coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 2,26,770.
