MADURAI: The Kanyakumari police in Tamil Nadu on Friday evening arrested four men and two minor boys for molesting an eight-year-old girl near Thengapattanam.
Superintendent of police (SP) N Sreenath said no physical assault had been attempted on the girl.
The accused have been identified as Muhammed Noogu, 75, who runs a provision store in the locality, Sahaya Dasan, 52, Zaheer Hussain, 53, Abdul Jaffar, 66, and two boys aged 15 years.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that the girl’s father was unemployed due to the lockdown. He along with his wife, who is mentally disturbed, and eight-year-old daughter, lived in a rented house.
A few days ago, the girl went around the area to seek financial help from people. The accused men and two minor boys handed over Rs 50 to the girl and made her remove her dress to show them her private parts.
Her father got to know about this and sought help from a few elders of the village. The villagers recorded a statement from the girl. The victim narrated the entire incident in the video.
The villagers informed top police officers. Officials from the Colachel all-woman police station (AWPS) arrested all the accused.
They were booked under different sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
After subjecting them to mandatory Covid-19 tests, the men were lodged in the district sub-jail in Nagercoil. The minors were lodged in a home for children in conflict with the law.
The SP warned of stringent action against those circulating video of the girl narrating the abuse. He said those forwarding it would be booked under Pocso Act.
Police said the girl would be given counselling to help her come out of the traumatic experience.
