Udupi: Scouts and guides members stitch masks for SSLC students

UDUPI: While many children use their time doing novel things during their vacations which turned out to be locked down this year, eight members of Scouts and Guides of a rural school of Udupi district took it on them to be socially productive and rise up to become corona warriors in their own right. High school students of St. Lawrence English Medium School in the remote rural ambience of Moodubelle, stitched face masks responding to a circular from the state unit of the Bharat Scouts and Guides.
The students expressed their interest to engage themselves in the task of stitching face mask right from home. Each of them sat on their sewing machines and got on to work right away. Most of them had a feel of the machine for the first time. Guided by their teachers and with the support of Principal, they got hold of good quality cotton material and experimented their skill in stitching. While Vinitia Cicilia D’Souza and Rayson Barboza successfully stitched 38 masks each, Malcon Aranha managed 37. Jenishal D’Mello, Sarosh Fernandes, Lipika Nayak, Vishith Shetty and Aditya Nayak collectively contributed to the rest which were handed over to the Secretary of Scouts and Guides of Kaup Zone, Anita Mendonca.
Complementing the kids on their contribution in the time of crisis, Principal of the school, Philip Noronha says ‘the interest shown by these children came as a pleasant surprise and was indeed the best thing to be done during a time when they could not come out of their home, yet be of use to society. These face masks are of good quality cotton and washable. They have also stitched another 30 masks which is for our students who will be writing their SSLC exams from June 25, who are expected to wear face masks compulsorily’.
