BENGALURU: Karnataka on Friday reported a record 515 fresh
Covid-19 cases, its highest ever spike in 24 hours till date. The state’s previous sharpest spike was 388 cases recorded on June 2.
For the third time in the last four days, Udupi reported the highest number of cases. In all, 204 persons, most of them returning from Maharashtra, from the district tested positive, accounting for 40% of the state’s cases for the day.
With 685 cases, Udupi is Karnataka’s worst hit district. The state’s total tally of the infected is 4835, of whom 3088 are active and under treatment in hospitals.
Of the new cases, 482 (94%) were inter-state travellers. Maharashtra returnees comprise the lion’s share at 473, followed by 3 from Delhi, two each Haryana and Andhra Pradesh and one each Tamil Nadu and Telangana.
A 42-year-old man who returned from Indonesia is among 10 Bengalureans testing positive.
Twelve of the newly-infected are contacts of Covid-19 positive patients, while 15 are from containment zones. Contacts of five patients are being traced. There are 152 women among the new positives.
Incidentally, no cases were reported from Raichur where 1022 samples were awaiting results on Thursday. Yadgir reported 74 cases and Kalaburagi 42.
Four districts in Karnataka — Udupi, Kalaburagi, Raichur and Yadgir — now have more than 300 active cases in designated hospitals.
