Income certs of 27 students who got seats under economically weaker section quota to be re-verified after they post photos of holidays abroad

The Maharashtra CET (Common Entrance Test) cell has sought re-verification of income certificates of 27 post-graduate medical students who got seats under the EWS (economically weaker section), SEBC and OBC quotas for 2020-21 academic year.

Acting on complaints pointing to social media posts bearing signs of foreign vacations and well-off positions of parents of these candidates on networking sites, the cell has sought a report from the certificate issuing authority. It has contacted the collectorates of 10 districts, including Mumbai.

CET Commissioner Sandeep Kadam confirmed that the cell had received a list of 27 students. He said the officials have checked their addresses and asked the collectorates to re-verify their income certificates. Their admissions, however, will remain untouched till the cell gets a report. Admissions are cancelled only after certificates are found to be invalid.

As per Mumbai Mirror’s May 29 report, several post-graduate medical aspirants had complained to the CET cell and the Directorate of Medical Research about the affluent family background of some students who had cited economic disadvantage in their applications. This had raised questions over their income certificates.

The CET had released its first-round of selection list of NEET-PG candidates on May 15. In one instance, the father of an EWS candidate holds a managerial position in a multinational company. In another instance, a complainant pointed out that the father of an EWS candidate is an MD (doctor of medicine) and a professor at a medical college.

The 10 per cent EWS quota includes those not covered under the scheme of reservation for SCs, STs, and OBCs and whose families have gross annual income less than Rs 8 lakh. The 2020-21 academic year is the first-year of implementation of the EWS quota for PG-medical seats. The OBC and SEBC (Maratha quota) candidates also need certificate with the same income cap.
