RDW university students demand not to hold exams

BHUBANESWAR: Students of Rama Devi Women's University on Thursday staged demonstration in front of the institution urging the government and university authorities to cancel the end semester examinations and apply alternative methods to promote the students.

A group of students holding placards staged dharna in front of the university entrance gate and pleaded the government to pay heed to their plea. "Around 24 per cent of the students of our university are now out of Odisha. Around 18 per cent of them are staying in containment zones. It is not safe to hold classroom examinations during this time," said Swikruti Mishra, first PG student of the university.

She said owners of the women's hostel in the city will not allow students coming from outside. "We have risk of infection while travelling in public transport and appearing examinations where we all will use same facilities in the university or colleges," she added.

She said the university either conduct examination through online mode or promote the students by counting their performance of previous semesters and internal test results. She said students had met higher education minister Arun Kumar Sahoo to consider their demand, but in vain.

The state government had decided that examinations for sixth semester of UG or Plus III final year will be held between June 20 and July 24. Result of these examinations will be declared by August 31. Similarly, final year PG examinations will be completed by August 20 and its results will be announced by September 20.


Padmaja Mishra, vice-chancellor of the university, said the decision of holding end semester examinations has been taken by the state government. "We cannot change the decision. End semester examination is important because we will conduct Common PG Entrance test later. Students should understand this," she added.


In a related development, members of National Students Union of India (NSUI), Odisha unit staged demonstration near Congress Bhawan here demanding exemption of school and college fees of students of Odisha for four months (from March to June) and relaxation in payment of fees for six months. Niranjan Das of the NSUI said people are facing financial crisis due to economic slowdown in the country. "Livelihood and small businesses are badly affected due to lockdown and it is difficult for them to pay fees of their children's school and college fees," he added.
