NEW DELHI: A mild earthquake of 3 magnitude struck Noida on Wednesday evening, with tremors felt across the National Capital Region (NCR) as well. This was the sixth earthquake since April 12 where tremors were felt in NCR. No damage to any property or any injuries were reported.
The National Centre of Seismology (NCS) initially classed the earthquake at 3.2, but later revised it to 3, with its epicentre 19km south-east of Noida. “The earthquake occurred at 10:42:29 IST at a latitude of 28.4 N and longitude 77.5 E. The depth was 4km below the earth’s surface,” said J L Gautam, head (operations) at NCS.
On May 29, NCR felt tremors from a 4.5 magnitude earthquake which had its epicentre in Rohtak, causing people to rush out of their homes.
Before that, all four earthquakes occurring in the region had their epicentre in Delhi, but measured 3.5 and lower on the Richter scale. Earthquakes below 4 magnitude are generally not known to cause any damage. NCS officials said these mild earthquakes are generally as a result of minor adjustments underneath the earth’s surface.
