Cyclone Nisarga did not have any major impact on telecom services in Maharashtra and Mumbai circles, even though there were some minor disruptions due to power failure.
“There was no major damage to the telecom network as most of the tower sites were undamaged, but some sites were down because of the power outage. All the tower firms have ramped up their teams, spare diesel at sites and mobile DG sets in addition to availability of Cell on Wheels (CoWs) sites are being ensured,” T.R. Dua, Director-General, Tower and Infrastructure Providers’ Association told BusinessLine.
Maharashtra has a total of 62,795 towers as per TAIPA data.
Earlier in May, telecom services across operators were disrupted after the super cyclone Amphan battered eastern India, as power outages impacted nearly 4,000 telecom towers in Kolkata and West Bengal circles.

Vodafone Idea Ltd (VIL) had set up war rooms to monitor its network and has readied its teams to manage any emergency situation to ensure connectivity as cyclone Nisarga passed through Maharashtra.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) also held a readiness meeting with telecom companies ahead of tropical storm Nisarga, in order to ensure connectivity in Maharashtra, Mumbai and Gujarat.
