Punjab: Man attacks five of family with axe; wife, nephew killed

ROPAR: A middle-aged man in Morinda town of Ropar district allegedly made a murderous attack on five of his family members including wife, sister-in-law, mother-in-law and his two nephews leaving two dead and two seriously hospitalized.
The police revealed that accused identified as Alam Jogi, 30, of Morinda was living in the house of his in-laws and on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, at around 1.30 am, he had made a murderous attack on five family members with an axe while they were sleeping in the house. After committing the crime the accused consumed poison and reached the police station to confess his crime following which he was immediately rushed to the hospital.
The police said that Alam’s mother in law had claimed that he was a suspicious man and used to doubt his wife’s character despite they had a 10-month-old daughter of their marriage.
The police said that Alam Jogi’s wife identified as Kajal, 30 and one of two nephews identified as Sahil, 12, succumbed to injuries on the spot while Kajal’s elder sister Jaspreet and her nephew Bobby, 14 are hospitalized with grievous injuries in PGI Chandigarh.
The police added that accused Alam’s mother-in-law Babli, told the police that she was in another room and rushed to the spot after hearing screams of the children while they were being attacked by the accused. She told the police that she managed to save herself and her 10 months old grandson by locking her into another room of the house but could not save others. She said she cried a lot for the help but all in vain as there are very few houses near them.
Babli further told the police she had three daughters including Saveena, Jaspreet and Kajal. She said, “My eldest daughter Saveena had gone abroad and left her two sons including Sahil and Bobby with me. My youngest daughter Kajal was married to the accused Alam Jogi around 2.5 years ago. Alam hails from Jandiala, Jalandhar but started living in her house from past some time. Alam used to doubt on the character of his wife Kajal without any reason and on Tuesday night he attacked all of them with an axe and later consumed some poisonous substance.”
DSP Morinda, SS Virk said, “We have registered a case under sections of murder and attempt to murder against the accused Alam on the complaint of Babli. He himself consumed poison and then reached the police station to inform about his crime. The cops immediately took him to the hospital after he informed he had consumed poison. Now he has been placed under arrest.”
