FALL RIVER -- The rally set for Saturday at Lafayette Park to protest the killing of George Floyd, who died last week at the hands of Minneapolis police officers, has been postponed, according to one of the gathering's organizers and the Coogan administration.
Bristol Community College student Katera James confirmed the update on Wednesday to The Herald News and on social media.
Both Mayor Paul Coogan and Fall River Police Chief Jeffrey Cardoza said they were also notified of the postponement, which came one day after riots and looting Tuesday night in Brockton and violence early Tuesday morning in Providence.
Coogan and Cardoza had met this week with the young organizers at Lafayette Park to discuss the peaceful rally.
However, a scheduled protest is moving forward today at 12 p.m. in Heritage State Park, also organized by students, according to Coogan.
Cardoza said on Wednesday that he had met with those organizers as well.
