Gautam Buddh Nagar reports 25 new cases

  • Twenty-five more people were found positive for coronavirus infection in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar on Wednesday, taking the COVID-19 tally to 521, said officials.
  • On the day, four patients were discharged from hospitals after recovery from, leaving 165 active cases in the district, the officials said.
  • Gautam Buddh Nagar adjoining Delhi, having the second-highest number of positive cases after Agra, has so far recorded eights deaths due to COVID-19, according to a state government data.

Rescued migrants stranded on chartered Maltese tourist boats

  • More than 400 migrants are living aboard pleasure cruise vessels bobbing in the sea off Malta, many of them for weeks now. But for them, it's no pleasure, only uncertainty over their fate and they aren't cruising anywhere.
  • Rescued from human traffickers' unseaworthy boats in several operations in the central Mediterranean since late April, the migrants, along with the Maltese government, are waiting for European Union countries to offer to take them in. So far, only France has stepped forward, pledging to accept some of the asylum-seekers.
  • France is one of a handful of EU countries which agreed last year to share the burden of caring for migrants rescued at sea by Malta and Italy.

Nepal cases reach 2,300

  • Nepal's coronavirus cases reached 2,300 on Wednesday after over 200 new infections were reported in the country, while the number of fatalities due to COVID-19 has gone up to nine following the death of an elderly man, according to the health ministry.
  • A total of 76 COVID-19 infections were reported from Kapilvastu, 26 from Rupandehi, 15 from Sarlahi and 11 from Rautahat, the Ministry of Health and Population said.
  • Nine patients were detected from Mahottari, eight each from Nawalparasi and Sunsari, seven each from kalikot, Dailekh and Parsa, 5 from Dang and three each from Kathmandu and Taplejung, it said.

Kerala HC restrains school from levying additional fees for holding virtual classes

  • Kerala High Court on Wednesday passed an interim order restraining schools from levying additional fees from students for holding virtual classes due to the ongoing coronavirus-induced lockdown.
  • A single bench of Justice CS Dias also referred to the petition to a division bench, in view of the "substantial public interest involved".
  • The bench also made reference to the suicide of 14-year-old Devika allegedly due to her inability to join online classes owing to the lack of a smartphone or a working TV in the house.

Scientists identify distinct trait in coronavirus in India

  • Scientists at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad have identified a distinct trait in the coronavirus found in the people infected in the country, mostly in the southern states of Tamil Nadu and Telangana.
  • They have named this unique cluster of virus population as 'Clade A3i' found in 41 per cent of the genome sequenced in India.
  • The researchers sequenced 64 genomes.

Delhi sets up panel for overall preparedness of hospitals

  • A five-member committee has been constituted by the Delhi government to strengthen the healthcare infrastructure and look into overall preparedness of hospitals to battle COVID-19, officials said.
  • The order to set up the panel was issued on Tuesday, the day Delhi recorded its highest single-day spike of 1,298 coronavirus cases.
  • The members of the panel are Dr Mahesh Verma, the vice-chancellor of IP University; Dr Sunil Kumar, the medical director of GTB Hospital; Dr Arun Gupta, president of Delhi Medical Council; Dr R K Gupta, former president of Delhi Medical Association; and Dr Sandeep Budhiraja, the group medical director of Max Hospital, the order said.
