Flying tin roofs, cars crushed under trees: DG NDRF tweets scary videos of Cyclone Nisarga

While not as devastating as the recent Cyclone Amphan, Cyclone Nisarga too left a trail of destruction in its path. DG NDRF has posted scary visuals of the cyclone's impact on Raigad, Pune and Alibag.

Cyclone Nisarga made landfall near Alibag on Maharashtra coast with the wind speed of more than 110 km per hour and heavy rainfall, leading to falling of many trees and electricity poles at 12.30 pm on Wednesday.

The cyclone hit areas near Dive Agar in Shrivardhan, 87 km away from Raigad.

While not as devastating as the recent Cyclone Amphan which ravaged West Bengal, Odisha and Bangladesh, Nisarga too left a trail of destruction in its path.

Especially scary is one video from the Raigad district, where the wind speed was so high that it ripped the tin roof off a house. The video was shared by Satya Narayan Pradhan, the DG of NDRF and is from the Pen region of the Raigad district.

In the video, strong winds blow away the tin shed structure of a house, causing the debris to fall on the roofs of other houses, causing damage to other properties in the process.

Other videos posted by the handle shows a similar scene happening at a grain godown in Raigad's Mangaon. As violent winds hit the region, the tin shed of the godown completely separates and falls to the ground.

Many houses in the Raigad region have suffered the same fate.

Alibag, the region where Cyclone Nisarga made landfall, too saw street carts upturned and trees and poles fall down.

As the storm made its way towards Pune, several low-lying areas were inundated and
incidents of trees falling due to gusty winds have also been reported at some places in the city.

A senior official from district disaster management cell said that sporadic incidents like trees felling and damage to houses and power disruptions were reported from some places. Trees fell on cars and houses, causing major damage.

In Mumbai, three members of a family were injured on Wednesday when cement blocks fell on their shanty in a chawl from an adjacent under-construction building in suburban Santacruz here due to gusty winds.

However, after storming the Maharashtra coast with wind speeds of up to 120 kmph on Wednesday afternoon, Cyclone Nisarga has started weakening and its intensity will reduce further by evening, the India Meteorological Department said.

The landfall of the cyclone began at 12.30 PM at Alibaug and the process was completed by 2.30 PM, IMD director general Mrutunjay Mohapatra said.
