NEW DELHI: The number of tests for detection of Covid-19 crossed the 40 lakh-mark on Wednesday morning, the Union health ministry said as the coronavirus cases shot up to over 2 lakh in the country. A total of 41,03,233 samples have been tested as of 9am on June 3, with 1,37,158 tests being conducted in the last 24 hours since 9am on Tuesday, officials of the Indian Council of Medical Research said.
India registered a record jump of 8,909 novel coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking the tally to 2,07,615 on Wednesday, while the toll rose to 5,815 with 217 more deaths, the health ministry said.

India

  • The testing capacity has been increased to 1.4 lakh per day through 480 government and 208 private laboratories (total 688 laboratories). The capacity is being further raised to two lakh samples per day, sources said.
  • With respect to the health infrastructure in the country for management of the disease, 952 dedicated Covid hospitals with 1,66,332 isolation beds, 21,393 ICU beds and 72,762 oxygen-supported beds are available as of now, the government said.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi on the Covid-19 pandemic and assured him of India's continued support, including medical assistance, to combat the health crisis.
  • For the first time since the nation-wide lockdown was announced in March, the government has allowed foreign businessmen, healthcare professionals and engineers to visit India but they will have to obtain fresh visas. In an order, the MHA said the foreign nationals, holding a valid long-term multiple-entry business visa, would also have to get their travel documents re-validated from the Indian missions.
  • Protest by the AIIMS Nurses' Union over their working condition entered the third day as the number of workers infected by Covid-19 at the premier hospital in the national capital stood at 329, with 47 of them being nursing staff.
  • Scientists at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad have identified a distinct trait in the coronavirus found in the people infected in the country, mostly in the southern states of Tamil Nadu and Telangana. They have named this unique cluster of virus population as 'Clade A3i' found in 41 per cent of the genome sequenced in India.
  • As the operation of Shramik Specials move towards culmination, Railways' data showed that of the 4,040 trains run till Sunday, 256 were cancelled by state governments, with Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh being the top defaulters.

States

  • Kerala: The state continued to witness a surge in Covid-19 cases with 82 people, including a doctor and four health workers, testing positive for the virus, taking the infection count to 1,494, while over 1.6 lakh people are under observation.
  • Delhi: A five-member committee has been constituted by the Delhi government to strengthen the healthcare infrastructure and look into overall preparedness of hospitals to battle Covid-19.
  • Haryana: The state resumed inter-state public transport services after remaining suspended for over two months in the wake of the coronavirus lockdown, a senior official said.
  • West Bengal: As the number of Covid-19 cases is on the rise in West Bengal with the return of migrants and as economic activities are resuming, the state government is planning to change the protocol of declaring a containment zone, and involve local people in policing an area.
  • HP: A couple in Himachal's remote Kinnaur has contracted coronavirus, the first cases in the district, as the state reported 12 fresh infections, pushing the Covid tally to 358.
  • Mizoram: A 30-year-old man who had recently returned to Mizoram from Delhi has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, taking the state's tally to 14.
  • Arunachal Pradesh: The state reported one more Covid-19 case after a person from Itanagar was found infected with the virus.
  • Uttarakhand: Twenty-three more people tested positive for Covid-19 in Uttarakhand, taking the total number of cases in the state to 1,066.
  • J&K: Seven policemen were placed under quarantine after a man who was arrested earlier this week on charges of domestic violence tested positive for Covid-19.
  • Nagaland: Nine more people tested positive for Covid-19 in Nagaland, taking the total number of cases to 58 in the state.
  • Assam: As many as 111 more people tested positive for Covid-19 in Assam, taking the total number of cases in the state to 1,672.
  • Goa: As many as 40 people from a Covid-19 containment zone in Goa tested positive for the disease. With this, the number of active Covid-19 cases in the state has reached 65.
  • Chandigarh: A 55-year-old woman from Chhattisgarh's Durg district, tested positive for Covid-19 post her death at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Raipur).
  • Meghalaya: A Meghalaya resident who had recently returned from Uttar Pradesh tested positive for Covid-19, taking the state's tally to 31.
  • Rajasthan: The Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation resumed bus services on over 200 routes, including three inter-state routes, in compliance with the government's guidelines for lockdown 5.0.
  • Odisha: The state reported 143 new cases of Covid-19, taking the total number of people infected in the state to 2,388.
  • Andhra Pradesh: In a single largest spike, 180 new Covid-19 cases were added in Andhra Pradesh, taking the aggregate to 3,971.
  • Ladakh: Nine more persons tested positive for coronavirus in Ladakh, taking the total number of cases in the Union territory to 90.
  • MP: Madhya Pradesh reported 168 new Covid-19 cases and seven deaths, taking the case count to 8,588 and fatalities to 371.
  • Tamil Nadu: The state reported 1,286 fresh coronavirus cases and 11 deaths, while for the first time 1,000 plus people tested positive in a single day here, taking the state's infection count to 25,872.
  • Sikkim: One more Covid-19 case has been reported from Sikkim. The state has a total of two Covid positive cases and both are asymptomatic.
  • Maharashtra: Maharashtra Police informed that 47 more of its personnel have tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours. The total number of infected Maharashtra Police personnel has reached 2,556.

  • The novel coronavirus has killed at least 380,428 people since the outbreak first emerged in China last December. At least 6,399,710 cases of coronavirus have been registered in 196 countries and territories.
  • The United States is the worst-hit country with 106,181 deaths from 1,831,821 cases. At least 463,868 people have been declared recovered.
  • Two Pakistani lawmakers died from the coronavirus, a day after a provincial minister succumbed to Covid-19 in the southern Sindh province. Mian Jamshed Kakakhel, 65, a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Member Provincial Assembly from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Pakistan Muslim League-N MPA from from Gujranwala Shaukat Manzoor Cheema died from the Covid-19.
  • Coronavirus cases in Singapore crossed the 36,000-mark as 569 new cases, mostly foreign workers living in dormitories, were confirmed, a day after low-risk businesses resumed operations with the end of the two-month long "circuit-breaker" period.
  • China has reported five new coronavirus cases, including four asymptomatic ones while Wuhan, the epicentre of the Covid-19, has not registered any infection.
  • The spread of novel coronavirus has accelerated again this month in Iran which officially confirmed over 3,000 new cases for a third consecutive day. The country has recorded an additional 3,134 cases, bringing the total number of infections to 160,696.
  • Rome's Leonardo da Vinci airport sprang back to life as Italy opened regional and international borders in the final phase of easing its long coronavirus lockdown, but it was still an open question how other nations would accept Italian visitors.
  • Nepal's coronavirus cases reached 2,300 after over 200 new infections were reported in the country, while the number of fatalities due to Covid-19 has gone up to nine following the death of an elderly man.
  • South Korea reported 49 new cases of Covid-19, continuing a weekslong resurgence of the virus as the government defended its decision to reopen schools despite health risks.
