Pune: Heavy rains lashed the city on Tuesday night as a result of ‘Nisarga’ cyclone in the Arabian Sea approaching the coastline of Maharashtra state. The India Meteorology Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy rains in and around Pune city till Thursday (June 4). Roads in the suburban parts of the city were flooded, resulting in water-logging in many parts. Meanwhile, citizens got relief from the soaring temperatures as the rains cooled off the night temperature.

The city had received light rainfall till Tuesday afternoon after witnessing a cloudy morning. The humidity level in the city was at a high of 93 per cent. At the same time, the average minimum temperature was 21.4 degree Celsius, and the maximum temperature was around 30.3 degree Celsius. It is expected that wind speed in Pune would be approximately 30 to 40 kilometre per hour for the next 48 hours. The IMD on Tuesday at 8.30 am registered 4 mm rainfall in the city in the last 24 hours.

The Khadakwasla dam area has received 10 mm of rainfall till 5 pm on Tuesday evening. Light rains started in the area since Tuesday morning. Rainfall of 3 mm was recorded in this area on Monday, while Panshet and Warasgaon dam area recorded 1 mm of rainfall.

The Peth areas of the city along with areas like Kothrud, Bavdhan, Aundh, Baner Road, Pashan, Mhalunge, Sus, Sinhagad Road, Dhayari, Ambegaon, Hadapsar, Kharadi, Vimannagar, Wadgaonsheri, Chandannagar also witnessed heavy downpour. Katraj and Dhankawadi suburb received light to moderate rains.

Traffic in Khadki area came to a standstill after heavy rains lashed this part of the city accompanied by gusty winds around 5 pm on Tuesday evening. The low-lying areas in Khadki Bazar locality like Indiranagar, Dargah Vasahat, Mahadevwadi were flooded as a result of which many slum-dwellers had to rush outside. Many societies in Ramwadi, Shastrinagar, Somnathnagar, Kalyaninagar on Nagar road also witnessed flash flooding. Local citizens questioned the claims of completing 80 per cent of pre-monsoon work made by Pune Municipal Corporation.

Parking lots of housing societies in Somnathnagar, Suprabhat society, Shubham, Gardenia, Ujjwal Garden, Anand Heights were flooded with rainwater resulting in damage to their vehicles. Citizens staying on the ground floor had to flee their homes due to flooding. A few minutes of heavy rains have brought citizens life to a standstill. Local MLA Sunil Tingre visited the rain-affected areas. He also made a video call to Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad to apprise him of the situation. A woman stuck in her apartment in Ujjwal Garden society was also rescued by activists of MLA Tingre.
