Cyclone Nisarga Live Updates: The center of Nisarga moved Northeastwards and crossed Maharashtra coast close to south of Alibaug and lay centered at 1.30 pm over coastal Maharashtra near latitude 18.4°N and longitude 73.0°E close to south-southeast of Alibaug and 80 km south-southeast of Mumbai. However, the rear part of wall cloud region is still over the sea and the landfall process will be completed by the next 1 hour. It is likely to move northeastwards and weaken into a cyclonic storm during next 6 hours, says India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Mumbai and neighbouring areas have braced for the cyclone as tens of thousands of people in its path have been evacuated, trains rescheduled, flights cancelled, fishermen ordered out of the seas and rescue workers put on standby.
The storm is likely to impact Mumbai, Thane and other coastal districts of Maharashtra like Raigad and Palghar along with Valsad, Navsari, Surat, Bhavnagar and Bharuch districts of Gujarat and Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
Cyclone Nisarga is very likely to move north-northeastwards and cross north Maharashtra coast close to the south of Alibagh (Raigad District, Maharashtra) during the afternoon of today (June 3) as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with maximum sustained wind speed of 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph.

Rain check:Light to moderate rainfall is expected at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places and extremely heavy falls ( ≥ 20 cm in 24 hours) at isolated places very likely over north Konkan (Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Raigad districts) and north Madhya Maharashtra during next 24 hours.
"After the landfall, the Severe Cyclonic Storm is very likely to maintain its Cyclonic Storm intensity for about 06 hours, while moving north-northeastwards across north Madhya Maharashtra. Under its influence Gale wind reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph very likely to prevail over Pune,Ahmadnagar and 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph adjoining Beed, Nashik & Aurangabad districts of Maharashtra. Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places are also very likely over these districts on 3rd June, 2020," as per the IMD release.

Mumbai will be impacted by a tropical cyclone for the first time in over a century and this is not the only thing that makes Cyclone Nisarga peculiar.
Scientists are of the opinion that the cyclone itself comes as a fresh reminder of the threats that climate change pose and what the future may look like if quick and effective measures are not taken to avert years of damage made to the environment.
Cyclone Nisarga latest update from Mumbai airport | Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport witnessed a runway excursion today with FedEx flight 5033 arriving from Bengaluru. The incident occurred when the MD11 aircraft landed on runway 14/32. The aircraft was towed away from the runway and there has been no disruption in flight operations. In consultation with the Airports Authority of India (AAI), considering the strong crosswinds, it has been decided that no arrivals and departures will take place between 2.30 pm and 7 pm, said Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in a media release.

About 1,500 citizens were evacuated and shifted to a safe and sturdy shelter in Alibaug in Raigad district of coastal Maharashtra earlier on Wednesday, as per Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's Office.
"Around 1,500 citizens evacuated and placed in safe sturdy shelter in Alibag, Raigad this morning," the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) tweeted.

Hundreds of people living close to various beaches in Mumbai are being shifted to safer places on Wednesday in light of cyclone 'Nisarga' which has made
landfall near Alibaug, 95 kms from here, police said.
"Hundreds of people living in areas near seashores like Colaba in south Mumbai, Worli and Dadar in Central Mumbai, and Juhu and Versova in Western Mumbai, are being shifted to safer places by the BMC with the assistance of the police," the police official said. (PTI)
